'The Mummy 4' directors tease 'scary and fun' sequel — Movieweb

Directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett say they know what the franchise needs after news in November 2025 that Universal Pictures is developing a legacy sequel and will bring back Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz to reprise Rick O'Connell and Evelyn O'Connell. The film would be directed by Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett with a script by David Coggeshall.

They are no strangers to horror franchises, having directed Ready or Not and currently working on the sequel Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. The duo also directed 2022's Scream and 2023's Scream VI, and put their spin on another Universal Monster with 2024's Abigail, about Dracula's daughter.

Gillett told Empire Magazine, "Having stepped into Scream, our radar for jumping into another franchise is that it has to feel special and [David Coggeshall’s] script really does that. It is very beautiful and sweeping and scary and fun."

That description suggests a return to form for the franchise. This is a developing story.
