Universal Pictures has set a May 19, 2028 release date for The Mummy 4 and confirmed that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz will return. The sequel will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from a script by David Coggeshall. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett bring franchise experience, having directed Ready or Not, the forthcoming Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, 2022's Scream, 2023's Scream VI and 2024's Abigail.

Gillett said David Coggeshall’s script “is very beautiful and sweeping and scary and fun.” The Mummy franchise began in 1932 with Boris Karloff, but most viewers know it from the 1999 film starring Fraser and Weisz and directed by Stephen Sommers. That picture spawned 2001's The Mummy Returns and 2008's The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor—films that did not bring back Weisz or Sommers—and produced the 2002 spin-off The Scorpion King plus two direct-to-video sequels without Dwayne Johnson.

Universal’s 2017 Tom Cruise reboot failed critically and commercially, halting plans for the Dark Universe.
