Collider criticized the Season 8 premiere of ABC's The Rookie, set in Prague, calling the overseas opener disappointing and illogical.

In the episode, John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) assists the FBI in a multi-agency sting in Prague alongside Monica Stevens (Bridget Regan), who has immunity and set up a buying process to help law enforcement locate a weapons trafficker. Nolan brings Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox) and his wife Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan) as backup; with FBI assistance they capture the criminal and save Monica after several enemies try to take her out, a result the review counts as a mission success that involved the Mid-Wilshire precinct.

The review argues the premise is implausible for Los Angeles-based officers, questions Bailey's inclusion as a firefighter/EMS, and says the Prague shoot did not advance long-term plot or character growth, leaving Monica's storyline a tad open-ended. It suggests the series could use new villains and rookies, and notes new episodes air on Tuesday nights on ABC and are available to stream on Hulu in the U.S.
