Nytimes reports that The Washington Post is eliminating its sports department, laying off or reassigning all reporters and editors as part of sweeping newsroom cuts announced days before the Super Bowl and the Winter Olympics in Italy. Don Graham published a eulogy after learning the department was being eliminated by Jeff Bezos.

In a videoconference, Matt Murray, The Post’s executive editor, acknowledged the section would be closed, said several reporters would be reassigned to cover sports “as a cultural and societal phenomenon,” and that the institution would maintain a section in print.

Murray said the ways sports content is delivered and consumed have changed, with video growing in popularity, leagues increasingly telling their own stories, and the sports media industry splintering into niche and broad providers; he added that The Post is not seen digitally as a major sports destination.
