Black Players for Change was formed after the killing of George Floyd and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement in the summer of 2020 as a space for conversation and advocacy among Black MLS players. The group has since become a fully established non-profit, forging relationships with Major League Soccer and U.S.
Soccer and positioning itself as a significant actor in the American game. The organisation has built a wide footprint of community work—citing initiatives from Minnesota to Columbus, Austin, Washington and Charlotte and support in Black communities in Florida, Georgia, Los Angeles, Cleveland and Indianapolis—and has been involved in projects such as Hometown Heroes and the MLS All-Star game.
