Thousands march in Nuuk to oppose Trump’s push to control Greenland
Thousands of Greenlanders marched across snow and ice in Nuuk on Saturday to protest Donald Trump’s repeated calls for US control of Greenland, chanting “Greenland is not for sale”, waving the national flag and finishing their trek at the US consulate. Just as the march ended, news broke that Trump had announced he would charge a 10% tariff on eight European countries from February, reportedly over their opposition to US control of Greenland.
Trump has long said he thinks the US should own the strategically located and mineral-rich island, which is a self-governing territory of Greenland, and the source says he intensified his calls after the military operation to oust Nicolás Maduro earlier this month. Organisers and participants described the demonstration as among the island’s biggest, drawing nearly a quarter of Nuuk’s population and including the Greenland prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
Malik Dollerup-Scheibel, 21, told the Associated Press: “I thought this day couldn’t get any worse, but it just did.” Rallies and solidarity marches were also held across the Danish realm, including Copenhagen, and in Nunavut in Canada’s far north. Marchers of all ages spoke of preserving Greenland’s autonomy and culture.
