Three movie masterpieces buried on Hulu
Disney has signaled that, at some point this year, the 19-year-old streaming service Hulu will shut down and be absorbed into Disney Plus. Before that happens, it’s worth checking the service’s movie library; beyond its well-known original series, Hulu has been a strong home for films that may not move over when the platform is folded.
O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) is the Coen brothers’ tightest, sharpest screenplay, a Depression-era comedy musical about three inmates who escape and search for buried treasure. George Clooney plays the fast-talking Ulysses Everett McGill, joined by John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson as his companions, and the film mixes Southern dialect, running jokes and a memorable soundtrack — including “I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow” — into a compact, witty journey loosely echoing The Odyssey.
The Bob’s Burgers Movie (2022) feels like a very good, long episode of the animated sitcom: a semi-musical that highlights the family’s oddball chemistry. H.
