Timo Werner has signed for Major League Soccer side San Jose Earthquakes, the club announced Thursday. The German international has joined on a multi‑year contract and will be a Designated Player for the rebuilding franchise. Werner has 115 career goals.

Goal described Werner as the highest‑profile signing in club history. The 29‑year‑old has 57 caps for Germany and won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021. San Jose’s offseason has been overseen by head coach and sporting director Bruce Arena.

Werner had fallen out of favour at RB Leipzig after returning there in 2022 on a four‑year deal. An unsuccessful loan to Tottenham last year left him with limited minutes; his contract was due to expire this June and Leipzig reportedly terminated the agreement early to facilitate the move.

The signing is a major coup for San Jose, who lost Cristian Espinoza earlier in the window to Nashville. Werner is likely to line up at striker after Chicho Arango reportedly agreed to a one‑year loan to Nacional. The club still has the flexibility to add players with open Designated Player and U22 slots.

San Jose will kick off their season on Feb. 21 when they host Sporting KC.
