Tom Cruise's 2026 comedy Digger compared to Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove
Movieweb reports that Jesse Plemons, speaking to Variety, compared Tom Cruise's upcoming 2026 comedy Digger to Stanley Kubrick's 1964 satire Dr. Strangelove.
Plemons called the script "one of the strangest, funniest, most tragic" he had read and said "there's a kind of modern-day Dr. Strangelove thing, and then it becomes something else entirely," adding that seeing Cruise "fully showing what an incredible actor he is" was "thrilling," the outlet said. The film is directed by Oscar-winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu and features an ensemble including Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed, Emma D'Arcy, Robert John Burke, Burn Gorman and Pip Torrens; a Gorillaz-soundtracked teaser played over Christmas, but Movieweb notes that "we still know basically nothing about the plot."
Talking to Deadline, Iñárritu described Digger as "a character-driven film mounted on the shoulders of Tom" and praised Cruise's range, saying, "I was so f****** impressed and happy." Star Wars: Starfighter director Shawn Levy also revealed that Cruise operated a camera for a lightsaber duel during a visit to the set. The film is scheduled for release on October 2, 2026; beyond the director's and cast comments, plot details remain scarce.
