Tomodachi Life sequel adds same-sex relationships, launches April 16
Nintendo’s Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will arrive April 16 and was showcased in a dedicated Nintendo Direct that confirmed the sequel will allow same-sex relationships and be available on both the original Switch and Switch 2 (with no upgraded Switch 2 edition announced). The follow-up to the 2013 3DS original was first revealed in a March 2025 Direct, with another trailer in September 2025; this week’s presentation offered an extended look and the official release date more than a decade after the original.
Mii customization has been expanded: during creation players can now select a character’s gender preference and choose a non-binary identity, plus new facial options such as ear selection. Personality settings remain similar, with five facets shaping interactions. Miis retain autonomy but players gain more control over relationships, including the ability to place Miis into interactions.
Miis can receive Little Quirks to develop unique habits, and up to eight Miis can live in one household, opening new possibilities for interpersonal drama. The Direct also showed extensive town customization and several businesses: Fresh Kingdom (food), Where and Wear (clothing), MNN (news), T&C Reno (room revamps), a Marketplace with mystery item bags, and Foto-Tomo for posing Miis.
Quik Build and Palette House offer town decoration and custom patterns, respectively.
