Tottenham warned of 'potentially catastrophic' relegation cost — Goal

Tottenham Hotspur have been warned of the "potentially catastrophic" cost of relegation from the Premier League. The club have appointed Igor Tudor as interim manager until the end of the season following the departure of Thomas Frank as they attempt to steer themselves clear of the drop.

Spurs sit 16th with 29 points from 26 games, five points above 18th-placed West Ham United; the Hammers have won three of their last five fixtures while Spurs have not won any, a run that preceded Frank's sacking. The Telegraph says the club face a financial hit of "tens of millions of pounds" even if they avoid relegation, because missing out on European football would prevent bonuses built into sponsorship deals.

Many sponsors are said to have relegation clauses allowing renegotiation or termination. An expert warned: "The penalties for missing Europe alone run into tens of millions.
