The True Story Behind Nick Offerman's Sovereign
Sovereign stars Nick Offerman and Jacob Tremblay as Jerry and Joe Kane, a widower and his teenage son who embrace sovereign citizen beliefs and reject government authority. The film contrasts the Kanes with Detective John Bourchart (Dennis Quaid) and his son Adam (Thomas Mann), and follows a tense escalation that ends in a tragic standoff.
The story is drawn from real people and events in Arkansas in 2010. Ohio-native Jerry Kane traveled the country giving seminars and speaking online about sovereign citizen ideology and pseudo-legal schemes to evade mortgages, credit card debt and taxes. He was arrested in New Mexico for driving without a license and later said, "I ran into a Nazi checkpoint in the middle of New Mexico where they were demanding papers or jail.
That was the option. Either produce your papers or go to jail.
