The United States Supreme Court ruled on Friday that President Donald Trump could not use national emergency powers to levy tariffs during peacetime. Trump announced a 10% global tariff following the Court's ruling and said he would levy the measure under other legal authorities, including the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 and the Trade Act of 1974.

Trump criticized the decision as "ridiculous" at a press conference and said he would act immediately. He said: "Effective immediately. All national security tariffs under Section 232 and Section 301 tariffs remain fully in place. And in full force and effect. Today, I will sign an order to impose a 10% Global tariff under Section 122 over and above our normal tariffs already being charged." Earlier, Trump had used the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose a 25% tariff on most goods coming in from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on goods coming in from China, framing both tariffs as a response to national security threats.
