President Trump is set to speak today at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, a much-anticipated address that has generated both excitement and trepidation. A large crowd of protesters reportedly descended on the main street ahead of his arrival, and the speech is expected to touch on Greenland, tariffs, housing and other topics.

Business leaders in Davos have expressed a pragmatic attitude toward the president’s visit, a posture one executive described to Lauren Hirsch as “adaptive normalcy.” Visible in town is a giant “No Kings” sign written into the snow on a mountain. On Wednesday, a panel moderated by Andrew Ross Sorkin with Larry Fink, Christine Lagarde, Ken Griffin and Adam Tooze focused heavily on trade: Lagarde noted that average tariffs on the eurozone are now around 12 percent, up from about 2 percent a year ago and that they could hit 15 percent, and Griffin called levies “regressive on the American consumer.” European leaders have denounced Mr.

Trump’s efforts to acquire Greenland, though it remains unclear how far he would go; Mr. Trump was reported to have said, “You’ll find out,” cryptically. The E.U. has so far held off on imposing tariffs even as a long-negotiated Euro-American trade deal appears at risk.
