Two high-speed trains derailed near Adamuz in the province of Córdoba in southern Spain, the private operator Iryo said, with police saying 10 people have died.

Reports from the country’s state-owned broadcaster said 100 people have been injured, 25 seriously, while RTVE, citing civil guard sources, said an unknown number of passengers had been hurt. Adif, which runs the rail network, said the Iryo 6189 Málaga to Madrid train derailed at Adamuz and crashed onto the adjacent track, and that the Madrid to Huelva train on the adjacent track also derailed.

Adif said the accident happened about 10 minutes after the Iryo train left Málaga heading for Madrid at 6.40pm (17.40 GMT). Iryo, an Italian-run private rail operator, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Adif has suspended all rail services between Madrid and Andalucía. Andalucía emergency services said all rail traffic had been halted and that emergency units, including at least nine ambulances and emergency support vehicles, were en route. Images shared by RTVE journalist Salvador Jiménez, who was on a Córdoba–Madrid service, showed a rear carriage on its side with evacuated passengers sitting beside it.
