Amos Kimble, an 18-year-old high school senior and state champion runner from Tyler County, West Virginia, ran a mile while carrying two chickens at his high school track, finishing the distance in 4 minutes, 55 seconds.

Kimble has been posting mile-long challenges on Instagram to boost his social-media presence and enliven winter training. His stunts have included pounding Sprite, milk and energy gels, running with his hands handcuffed behind his back, and running blindfolded on a treadmill while his girlfriend threw household objects.

His self-described "chicken mile" first resonated with viewers when he ran a single hen in 4:57 while cradling it; that clip has been viewed about 700,000 times on his @amosruns account and drew reactions from Matt James and several pro runners. For the two-chicken run he selected Buff Orpingtons for their calm temperament, tucked one under each arm, completed the first lap in about 1 minute 12 seconds, and said afterward that the birds "didn’t poop on me."

Kimble logs about 60 miles a week and has a personal best of 4:18 for the mile. He plans to run and study engineering at Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va., in the fall.
