The Netflix documentary Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model examines the behind-the-scenes chaos and complicated legacy of the long-running series. Tyra Banks appears on screen, but the filmmakers say she had no creative control and will see the finished film like any subscriber.

Co-director Mor Loushy said it took several months to secure Banks’s participation. When she agreed to be interviewed, the directors found her “very emotional” as she sought to tell her side of the story, paralleling the contestants who also share their perspectives.

Alongside Banks, the film features executive producer Ken Mok, longtime judges J. Alexander, Jay Manuel and Nigel Barker, and former contestants including Shandi Sullivan, Dani Evans, Whitney Thompson, Ebony Haith and Giselle Samson. The series has faced criticism over commentary about contestants’ weight and appearance and for photoshoots that had participants portray different races or simulated murder victims.
