Ubisoft lays off 40 at Toronto studio; Splinter Cell remake still in development
Ubisoft has cut 40 jobs at its Toronto studio as part of the company’s restructuring into "creative houses", a process that has also included game cancellations, studio closures and other layoffs. A Ubisoft spokesperson said the decision was not taken lightly and does not reflect the talent or contributions of the people affected.
The company said it will provide comprehensive severance packages and career placement assistance to support those impacted. Launched in 2010, Ubisoft Toronto is one of the company's largest studios with more than 500 employees and has worked on Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Watch Dogs, For Honor and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell series.
The studio joined efforts on the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake, which was later cancelled, though it’s unclear whether that cancellation is connected to this round of cuts. The Splinter Cell remake, announced more than four years ago, remains in development despite a long silence around the project.
