United States has hosted the most Olympic Games — eight total
The 2026 Winter Olympics kick off February 6, 2026, with the Opening Ceremony in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, bringing Italy's Olympic-host total to four. But the country that has hosted the most Olympic Games is the United States, with eight in all.
The U.S. has hosted four Summer Olympics (1904 in St. Louis; 1932 and 1984 in Los Angeles; and 1996 in Atlanta) and four Winter Olympics (1932 and 1980 in Lake Placid; 1960 in Olympic Valley; and 2002 in Salt Lake City).
France ranks second with six Olympic Games: three Summer editions in Paris (1900, 1924 and 2024) and three Winter Games (Chamonix 1924; Grenoble 1968; Albertville 1992).
Japan and Italy are tied for third with four hostings each. Japan hosted Summer Games in Tokyo in 1964 and 2021 and Winter Games in Sapporo (1972) and Nagano (1998). Italy’s four include the 1960 Summer Games in Rome, Winter Games in Cortina d'Ampezzo (1956) and Turin (2006), and the upcoming 2026 Milan–Cortina Games.
The United Kingdom, Canada and Germany each have hosted three Olympics. London held the Summer Games in 1908, 1948 and 2012; Canada hosted Summer Montreal 1976 and Winter Calgary 1988 and Vancouver 2010; and Germany hosted Berlin 1936 and Munich 1972 (plus the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen).
The Games begin February 6, 2026, and the Opening Ceremony in Milan will include performances slated from Mariah Carey and Andrea Bocelli.
