A Russian ‘Village of Military Valor’ Waits for Its Reward — NYT > World News

On the Kamchatka Peninsula’s remote coast, the Indigenous hamlet of Sedanka looks neglected: Soviet-era houses are collapsing, most homes lack running water, and blocked sewage feeds puddles on dirt streets while animals rummage through overflowing dumps. Yet Gov.

Vladimir Solodov announced he intended to award Sedanka the title of 'Village of Military Valor,' a designation long used for Soviet cities that were major World War II battlefields, saying the hamlet had earned it by sending many fighters to Ukraine. Out of an estimated 250 people, 39 of 67 men deployed, Mr.

Solodov wrote on Telegram that the villagers’ heroism must be immortalized. The designation has not been made official, and apart from a one-time delivery of firewood, the wider aid the governor promised has not arrived, residents and a documentary say. Neither the governor nor the Kamchatka provincial legislature responded to questions for comment.
