People reports students at Wendover Middle School in Greensburg, Pa., earlier this month opened a time capsule sealed in the year 2000.

ABC affiliate WTAE said students were given the chance to "time travel" back to 2000, and local station KVUE reported the capsule contained magazines, toys and even a cassette player. "I'm seeing a lot of magazines, especially Britney Spears. That's what I'm most interested in," said Charlotte Airgood, part of the 2030 graduating class. For Rylan Steininger, a floppy disk was unfamiliar: "My parents have told me about it. They ask me trivia questions about it sometimes," he told WTAE. "This is my first time seeing it in real life."

Bobbi Springer, an eighth-grade special education teacher who was at the school when the capsule was created, led the effort; the capsule had been placed behind a wall for safekeeping and survived multiple renovations. Springer said the point of the capsule is to remind students that "everyone leaves something behind — and everyone matters." School officials wrote that "The time capsule brought pieces of history to life and inspired today’s students to think about how they can leave their own mark in time," calling it a "truly special moment for our school!"
