Grief looms large on streaming this week. Daisy Ridley stars in We Bury the Dead, a survivor horror in which Ava volunteers for body recovery after a U.S. military bomb detonates off the coast of Tasmania and kills all 500,000 people on the island. Told there is a possibility the dead might have risen, she defies military guidance to search for her husband.

The film benefits from location shooting, Zak Hilditch’s clear compositions, and Ridley’s haunted yet determined performance. Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet offers a somber view of William Shakespeare’s personal life. Jessie Buckley plays Agnes Hathaway opposite Paul Mescal’s portrayal of the bard, and the film dwells on the grief that follows the death of their son Hamnet — a loss that inspired the tragedy Hamlet.

The film received eight Oscar nods. For something stranger, Obex follows Conor Marsh as he becomes trapped inside a 1987 computer game and must rescue his dog Sandy from a demon lord; the film leans into its limited budget to amplify its oddness.
