Where to Watch Robert Duvall’s Top Performances
Robert Duvall, whose screen presence was natural and grounded, died on Sunday at age 95. He was best known for playing rugged, capable men drawn from America’s past, present and possible future, and his quiet intensity made roles from the TV western Lonesome Dove to the cop drama Colors consistently riveting.
Many top writers, directors and producers wanted to work with him; his lack of pretension and unforced machismo fit a wide range of films. He worked repeatedly with Robert Altman and Francis Ford Coppola, and he starred in George Lucas’s experimental THX 1138, where his improvisational, low-key acting gave the picture a human heart.
Some of his most memorable turns include Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird, the Irish American lawyer Tom Hagen in The Godfather, and Lt. Col. Kilgore in Apocalypse Now — a brief but indelible performance. He won an Academy Award for Tender Mercies and gave what he called perhaps the finest performance of his career as Gus McCrae in the miniseries Lonesome Dove.
