In HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, episode 3 introduces a major reveal: Dunk’s small, bald squire Egg is actually Aegon V Targaryen, the son of Prince Maekar, the series’ latest episode shows (published Feb. 1, 2026). The episode and accompanying reporting identify Egg as the child of Prince Maekar Targaryen and the brother of Aerion and Daeron; his uncle Baelor is next in line for the Iron Throne.

The nickname Egg was given by his brother Aemon, the maester best known to Game of Thrones viewers for serving at Castle Black, and he also has two sisters, Rhae and Daella. Onscreen, Egg follows Dunk to the Ashford Meadows tourney and signs on as his squire. The show also depicts the fallout when Maekar worries over a missing son, Daeron lies that Egg was kidnapped, and Dunk attacks Aerion while defending the puppeteer Tanselle — developments that leave Dunk in serious trouble.

The article notes (with book spoilers) that in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire stories Egg ultimately becomes King Aegon V. A soothsayer at Ashford prophesies Egg will “be king and die in a hot fire,” and the novels depict later events: Maekar’s death during the Peake Uprising, the deaths or refusals of other claimants, Egg’s accession as Aegon V, Dunk joining his Kingsguard and later becoming its commander, and Aegon’s popularity with commoners; he and his wife Betha Blackwood fathered Duncan and Jaehaerys.
