Wonder Man creators noncommittal on Simon Williams as a mutant in MCU
Movieweb reports series creators Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest were non‑committal when asked whether Wonder Man's lead, Simon Williams, is a mutant in the MCU, responding "I don't know" and, as the outlet said, Guest adding, "It's a good question, though."
In Marvel Comics, Simon Williams is approached by Baron Zemo and subjected to an experimental ionic ray bombardment that infuses his body with ionic energy and transforms him into an immortal being of pure energy. The MCU has only recently begun reintroducing characters with mutations — for example, 2022's Ms. Marvel reimagined Kamala Khan as a mutant and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever featured Namor identifying himself as a mutant — and the series' marketing has shown Wonder Man's explosive powers while early reviews note the show leans toward a character study between Yahya Abdul‑Mateen II's Simon Williams and Sir Ben Kingsley's Trevor Slattery rather than nonstop superhero action.
Questions remain about whether Wonder Man will explicitly establish Simon's origin or mutant status, and with Helmut Zemo reportedly confined to the Raft the odds of Zemo featuring in that origin were described as quite low; all eight episodes of Wonder Man will debut on Disney+ on Jan. 27, leaving viewers to learn the answer when the series arrives.
