Writer defends controversial scene in Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die
Screenwriter Matthew Robinson unpacks the origins of Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die, a time-loop sci-fi that follows a disheveled stranger—played by Sam Rockwell—who bursts into a Los Angeles diner claiming he was sent from the future to avert an AI apocalypse.
Directed by Gore Verbinski, the film tracks one of the traveler’s repeated attempts to save the world and fills in backstories for a supporting cast that includes Juno Temple, Michael Peña, Zazie Beetz, and Haley Lu Richardson. Good Luck opens Feb. 13. Robinson says he leaned into obvious influences rather than hiding them, pointing to Edge of Tomorrow, The Terminator, 12 Monkeys, Akira, Brazil and the work of Terry Gilliam.
