WSL talking points: Arsenal punish City and Chelsea get into the groove
Arsenal made Manchester City pay for a rare off-day, beating them 1-0 at the Emirates. Andrée Jeglertz said City’s “decision-making wasn’t ideal all the time during the game.” City had 22 touches in the opposition box to Arsenal’s 19 but managed only one shot on target to Arsenal’s four.
Despite the defeat they remain top of the WSL, eight points clear of Manchester United (seven if Arsenal win their game in hand), with a goal difference 10 better than United’s; in a 12-team, 22-game season that lead looks hard to overturn. City now face bottom-placed Leicester and then Aston Villa.
Chelsea returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Tottenham, and Sonia Bompastor responded to a noisy week by insisting: “I know who I am, I don’t need people outside my environment to tell me who I am. I will always make sure I give my best.” Spurs outcreated Chelsea by 12 shots to eight in the first half, but Keira Walsh’s goal just before the break swung momentum and ultimately made the difference.
