Yeo Valley tops Guardian taste test of supermarket natural yoghurts
A Guardian tasting of supermarket live (natural) yoghurts rated Yeo Valley Organic whole milk natural yoghurt best overall, while Morrisons natural yoghurt was named the best bargain. The piece lists prices and star ratings for a range of plain, full‑fat options sold at UK supermarkets.
The tester says live yoghurt is the bedrock of their family’s diet and that their six‑year‑old consumes well over a kilo a week. The article explains that live yoghurt contains active bacterial cultures such as Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Streptococcus thermophilus, which give yoghurt its tang, texture and digestibility and are linked to gut health.
Yeo Valley Organic (450g) was described as creamy, pourable and sweet‑forward with balanced acidity and made from organic British milk. Morrisons natural yoghurt (500g) was praised as thick, creamy and good value. Other noted products include Duchy Organic Greek‑style (very rich and indulgent), Onken set (thick, clean‑tasting and fortified with vitamin D), St Helen’s Farm goat’s milk (very thick with a pronounced sour twang), Pakeeza live set (very thick and set in the pot), and budget options from Asda and Tesco, which were described as reliable and good value.
The tester also notes that clear provenance is lacking across the group: while most are made from British milk, that provides limited transparency.
