Since the iPhone 15, Apple phones have switched to USB-C, and that little port is more than just a power inlet. If you’ve only used it for charging, you’re missing out on a range of practical features that can change how you use your device. USB-C simplifies charging: one cable can work for iPhones, iPads, MacBooks and many other gadgets, making travel easier and cutting down on electronic waste.

The move was partly driven by rules such as the EU’s common charger mandate that took effect in December 2024. The port can also provide reverse wired charging, acting as a small power bank for accessories like an Apple Watch or earbuds — the phone’s output is about 4.5 watts and can top up things like JBL earbuds in a pinch.

For productivity, USB-C opens the phone to plug-and-play peripherals: keyboards, USB-C microphones, MIDI controllers and ethernet adapters turn an iPhone into a compact workstation for drafting, recording or reliable internet access.
