John Wick is a 2014 American neo-noir action thriller film directed by Chad Stahelski in his directorial debut, from a screenplay by Derek Kolstead. The film stars Keanu Reeves as John Wick, a retired hitman seeking vengeance for the theft of his vintage Mustang and the killing of his puppy, a gift from his recently deceased wife. The film also stars Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen, Adrianne Palicki, Bridget Moynahan, and Willem Dafoe. John Wick is set in New York City and follows John Wick, a retired hitman who is forced back into action when his beloved wife dies. Wick's wife had left him a beagle puppy named Daisy, which helps him cope with his grief. One night, Viggo Tarasov, a Russian crime lord, and his son Iosef Tarasov come to Wick's house and steal his vintage Mustang. Iosef also kills Daisy. Wick is enraged and vows revenge. Wick goes to the Continental Hotel, a neutral ground for criminals, where he meets Aurelio, a friend and fellow assassin. Aurelio tells Wick that Iosef is Viggo's son and that Viggo will not be happy if Wick kills Iosef. Wick decides to go after Iosef anyway. Wick tracks Iosef down to a nightclub and kills him. Viggo is furious and puts a $2 million bounty on Wick's head. Wick is hunted by Viggo's men, but he manages to stay one step ahead of them. In the end, Wick kills Viggo and his men. He then returns to the Continental Hotel and checks out. As he leaves, he is greeted by Aurelio, who tells him that he is now a free man. John Wick was a critical and commercial success. It was praised for its action sequences, Reeves' performance, and Stahelski's direction.
