Edward Christopher Sheeran, MBE (/ˈʃɪərən/; born 17 February 1991) is an English singer, songwriter, guitarist, record producer and actor. Sheeran was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire and raised in Framlingham, Suffolk. He entered the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford as a student in 2009 when he was 18 years old. In early 2011, Sheeran independently released an extended play titled No. 6 cooperative projects. After signing with Asylum Records, the debut album + (pronounced "plus") was released in September 2011. The album topped the UK and Australian album charts, peaked at number five in the US and was certified seven times platinum in the UK. The album spawned the single "The A Team", for which he won an Ivor Novello Award for Best Song, Musically and Lyrically. In 2012, Sheeran won the Brit Awards for Best British Male Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Actor.
