Not only is a pregnant red cherry shrimp and interesting specimen to discuss biologically and evolutionarily, but she is also a rather beautiful creature to watch, whilst she is caring for her unborn offspring. There are four distinct phases of pregnancy in neocaridina shrimp. the first being that a female shrimp has eggs in her ovaries, also known as a saddle. The second stage being the movement of the eggs from her ovaries and out of her body. Only to be carefully held onto by her rear legs, and allowed to hang below her belly. Here Cherry Shrimp are ready to have a male fertilize their brood. Third, she is fertilized and the eggs are a bright yellow or green color and she constantly moves them around to keep oxygen and nutrients supplied to the Unborn shrimp, as well as cleaning off bacteria and fungi. Lastly she will hatch her shrimplet and release them onto their own Into the Wild as miniature versions of herself.
