The Sad Story Behind the Frozen Russian Ghost Town This is Vorkuta
Vorkuta itself is a city founded in the 1930s. The city was formerly a Gulag labor camp, where during the reign of Joseph Stalin, prisoners were forced to mine coal.
With the influx of immigrants, the town grew and became a place of residence for coal miners and their families.
Unfortunately, when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, many of the mines eventually had to be closed. The miners also lost their jobs and eventually became unemployed.
