Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS), specifically the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. The immune system mistakenly attacks and damages the myelin sheath, a protective layer that surrounds and insulates nerve fibers, leading to inflammation and scarring (sclerosis). This damage disrupts the normal transmission of nerve impulses and can cause a wide range of symptoms, including muscle weakness, numbness, difficulty with balance and coordination, vision problems, and cognitive changes.
