There have not been any Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie updates about the story, however, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 gave some hints at where things could go next. The end of the film introduced the game's concept of Super Sonic, which is Sonic powered by the Chaos Emeralds, something that could be further explored in the third film. Also, the film ended with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles being together as a trio, with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 promising to feature an adventure with all three characters together from the start. The mid-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 introduced one of the more famous game characters: Shadow the Hedgehog. Due to this, Shadow is expected to be used as the main antagonist of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Shadow's introduction also sets up the further inclusion of other game characters, such as Rouge the Bat, the longtime partner of Shadow in the games and another antihero. The scene also suggests Robotnik managed to escape with the military believing he died but his henchman Agent Stone lurking in the area.
