Is it true that Korean cuisine is inspired by Japanese cuisine
Gimbap or kimbap is a popular Korean food made from white rice (bap) rolled in sheets of dried seaweed or game, commonly known as nori in Japanese. The gimbap is then cut into bite size pieces.
Rice and seaweed are the two basic ingredients for gimbap. The contents may vary. However, it usually consists of a source of protein (fish cake, imitation crab meat, eggs, or beef) and vegetables (cucumber, spinach, carrots, or pickled radish).
Gimbap is indeed inspired by rolled sushi that was brought to Korea during the Japanese occupation. However, gimbap differs in that the rice is seasoned with sesame oil instead of rice vinegar like sushi. When you taste both, you will feel the difference in taste.
The contents of the gimbap which contain pickles also make the gimbap taste a bit sour, in contrast to sushi which is a bit fishy because it uses raw fish meat. In addition, gimbap is more like futomaki than makizushi, the most popular type of sushi in Indonesia. The gimbap tends to be wider in diameter because it contains more filling and is cut thinner.
