Scams that can happen to anyone at any moment and some of the most popular scams that are currently happening here today in 2023 is the money drop method, phishing websites, and sim swap attacks. The money drop method revolves around a scammer dropping a fake check into their victims account to entice and convince them into handing over their login credentials to a brand new bank account the scammer had them setup. Once they obtain this information, they will login and transfer as much as they can out of their victims bank account before the check gets flagged as fraudulent by the bank. Then we have phishing websites. Scammers love creating these websites because they are designed to mirror a legitimate business or organization in order to steal login credentials or maybe even credit card information. Last but certainly not least, we have sim swap attacks. now sim swapping happens when scammers contact your mobile phone carrier and trick them into activating a sim card that the scammers have. Once this occurs, the scammers will then have full control over your phone number and will have access to any and all apps, photos, text messages, contacts, website history, pretty much anything that is on your phone. Anyone calling or texting this number will be contacting the scammers device, not your smartphone. This is known as sim swap fraud and it means scammers could potentially enter your username and password when logging onto your bank’s website. The bank will then send a code by text — two-factor authentication — to your smartphone number, a code that you’ll then have to enter to access your online account. The problem? After a sim swap attack, that number now goes to the smartphone or other device possessed by the scammers. They can then use that code to be granted access into your bank account.
