Mercury is the innermost planet in our solar system and is known for its extreme conditions. It is a small, rocky world with a diameter of about 4,880 kilometers (3,032 miles). Mercury has no substantial atmosphere to speak of, which means it experiences extreme temperature variations, with scorching surface temperatures that can reach up to 430 degrees Celsius (800 degrees Fahrenheit) during the day and frigid temperatures as low as -180 degrees Celsius (-290 degrees Fahrenheit) at night. It takes approximately 88 Earth days to complete one orbit around the Sun and rotates very slowly, with one day on Mercury lasting about 176 Earth days. Its surface is heavily cratered and contains features such as cliffs, ridges, and large impact basins.
