Because “flute” derives from the Italian “flauto.” In the mid 17th century, around the time of Henry Purcell, musical fashion dictated that perfectly good English terms for tempo markings and instruments be replaced by Italian ones. Of course, those tasked with finding these replacements were neither linguists nor translators, so quite a few of the new terms ended up being awkward mashups.
