Storyline Hercule Poirot, who is retired and resides in Venice in 1947, hires former police officer Vitale Portfoglio as his bodyguard. Mystery writer Ariadne Oliver persuades Poirot to go to a Halloween party and séance at renowned opera singer Rowena Drake's palazzo on Halloween in order to reveal Joyce Reynolds—a World War I army nurse who later became a medium—as a fraud. There are rumors that the palazzo itself is haunted by the spirits of children who were locked up and left to die when a plague swept through the city, and that the spirits torment any nurses and doctors who dare to enter. The palazzo was once an orphanage.
