SAPE is used by the #Dayak community as a musical instrument to express feelings, either happy or sad.
According to the way it is played, Sape' in the local #Dayak Tribe language means "picking with the fingers". The name Sape' itself is a reference to Dayak Kenayan and Dayak Kenyah. Meanwhile, other Dayak tribes call it Sampe', Sempe, Kecapai.
As is known, the Dayak tribe is the original inhabitants of the interior of Borneo who inhabit the island of #Kalimantan. According to them #SAPE is a musical instrument that functions to express a feeling; joy, affection, longing, even sorrow. In the past, it turned out that playing the Sape' musical instrument had a different meaning. At noon; produces rhythms that express feelings of joy and joy. Meanwhile at night; will produce a rhythm that has a melancholy, serene or sad tone.
In the daily life of the Dayak tribe, Sape' is also used as a means to convey intentions and praise to those in power; both spirits and ordinary humans have power. Apart from that, Sape' is also used to accompany various kinds of Dayak dances.
Seeing the traditions of the Dayak people, especially Dayak Kenyan and Dayak Kenyah. There is oral literature passed down from generation to generation, namely "Tekuak Lawe". In it there is an expression about Sape'. "sape benutah tulaang to'awah" that's what it says. Literally it can be interpreted that Sape' is able to crush the bones of ghosts that haunt.
This expression describes; The Sape' musical instrument is capable of giving people who hear it goosebumps that touch their bones or feelings. For previous Dayak traditional elders, the belief in the sacredness of Sape' could truly be felt. The rural atmosphere and traditional nuances which at that time were still very strong were the reasons.
SAPE itself as a musical instrument owned by the Dayak tribe consists of two types, the first is Sape' Kayaan (invented by rich people). This type of sape' has 4 scales with the characteristics of a wide body, small stem, about 1 meter long, has 2 strings/ropes made of plastic material. While the second is Sape' Kenyah (found by the Kenyah people). Sape' this type; has a small, elongated body, at the end it is small, about 1.5 meters long, has a scale of 11-12 and the string comes from guitar strings or fine strings of three to 5 strands.
Of the two types of Sape', Sape' Kenyah is the most popular. This is because the rhythm and sound of the chanting can make the listener feel like they are in the air. In the past, when night fell, young people slowly started playing it. Streets or betang houses (Communal houses of the Dayak community) which make the house owners fall asleep and enjoy them.
This musical instrument has been recognized as originating from the Kayaan community around the Mendalam River basin, Kapuas Hulu, West Kalimantan. It is said that he came from a group of small Kayaan communities around the Mendalam river basin who had a dialogue in Pagung, Datah Dian Village
