The Hulusi is made from one of four bamboo pipes that have small brass or silver reeds inserted flush with the sides of the pipe, then surrounded by a gourd or brass wind chamber (in modern instruments). . Hulusi originally came from the Dai-zu or Dai (Thailand) minority in southern China, but can now be found played by a number of surrounding minority communities including the Jin Po and Wa. The name Hulusi is a Han term with "hulu" meaning gourd, while the Dai call it katakandao which literally translates as "pi-blown tip, surrounded by gourd".
