Ukraine raises stakes at war with strikes deep inside Russia. Ukraine on Monday struck two Russian air bases far from the frontline raising the stakes at the war and demonstrating its capabilities to attack at long distances. Kyiv executed the strikes using drones. The attack on the airbases was the deepest strike inside Russia since the start of the invasion on February 24. Ukraine hit Engels-2 and Dyagilevo airbases in Russia’s Ryazan and Saratov regions in what appear to be pre-emptive strikes on bombers that Russia deployed to cripple Ukraine’s electricity grid. Both airbases host Tu-95 long-range bombers. The attack killed three servicemen, injured four others and damaged two aircrafts, the Russian Defence Ministry reported. It was followed by Russia’s large-scale missile strikes on Ukraine on Monday. Ukraine’s ability to hit that far raises questions over its next moves, especially with regards to its Russian-annexed Crimea region where Russia has military bases. These questions are also relevant as Ukraine has started manufacturing its longer-range combat drones. Last month, Ukraine’s state-owned weapons manufacture, Ukroboronprom, announced that the development of Ukraine-made drone was being finalized. Today, The Ukroboronnprom issued another statement, saying that its has ran a number of successful tests of the Ukrainian strike drone with a 1,000-km range. Ukraine has not officially claimed the responsibility for the attack on Russian air bases.
