The ladybird beetle (also known as ladybug) is a small beetle belonging to the family Coccinellidae. They are easily recognized by their small, round appearance and colorful backs, with some species having spots. Laypeople sometimes refer to ladybird beetles as ladybugs due to their size and hard wing covers, but these beetles are not related to true bugs (Hemiptera) at all. These insects are known as friends of farmers because some of them prey on pest insects like aphids. However, there are some ladybird beetle species that also feed on leaves, making them parasites to plants.
These beetles are found all over the world, especially in areas where plants that serve as their food source are abundant. There are approximately 5,000 species of ladybird beetles in the world, with the largest species reaching nearly 1 cm in length.
