Narayan's Kurma Avatar | Mandar Parvat Samudra Manthan The Devas (celestial beings) and Asuras (demons) agreed to work together to obtain the nectar of immortality called Amrita. They used Mandara Parvat, a massive mountain, as a stirring rod, and Lord Shiva's Vasuki (Snake), the king of serpents, as a rope to churn the cosmic ocean. However, because Mandara Parvat was extremely heavy, it started sinking into the ocean. To prevent this, Lord Vishnu took the form of Kurma, a divine tortoise, with a strong and wide shell.
