The Door to Hell, also known as the Darvaza gas crater, is a natural gas field in Derweze, Turkmenistan that has been burning continuously since 1971. The crater, over 230 feet wide and 65 feet deep, formed when a Soviet drilling rig collapsed into an underground cavern, releasing methane gas and causing the ground to collapse. In an attempt to prevent the spread of the gas, it was set on fire, expecting it to burn out within a few weeks. However, the fire has been burning for over 50 years, earning it the nickname "Door to Hell." The eerie glow of the fiery crater against the night sky has made it a popular tourist attraction and a truly mysterious place in Turkmenistan.
