How Do Oysters Make Pearls
Oysters produce pearls as a defense mechanism against irritants that enter their shells. When a foreign object, like a grain of sand or a parasite, intrudes, the oyster secretes layers of a substance called nacre around it. Over time, layer upon layer of nacre coats the irritant, forming a pearl. The process of pearl formation, known as "pearl cultivation," can take several years. Cultured pearls, created with human intervention, mimic this natural process by inserting a nucleus into the oyster, prompting nacre deposition. Pearls vary in color, size, and shape, influenced by the oyster species and environmental factors.
