The Story of the Titanic
what actually happened during the voyage until the titanic's sinking
April 10, 1912: The Titanic leaves the port of Southampton, England, on her maiden voyage. She then calls at Cherbourg in France and Queenstown (now Cobh) in Ireland.
April 14, 1912:- During the Day, Titanic receives several warnings of icebergs in the area. However, due to various factors, including the pressure to maintain high speed and break crossing records, these warnings are not taken seriously enough.
- That evening, at around 11:40 pm, watchman Frederick Fleet spotted an iceberg ahead and sounded the alarm. Despite efforts to avoid collision, the Titanic struck the iceberg on its starboard side at 11:40 pm.
- During the night of April 14 to 15, the damage caused by the impact was severe, compromising several of the ship's watertight compartments. Water began to seep into these compartments, leading to progressive flooding of the ship.
April 15, 1912:
- At 00h05mn: Rescue operations begin, and passengers are informed of the situation.
- At 02h20mn: The Titanic begins to sink. Lifeboats are gradually lowered into the water, but there are not enough for all passengers and crew.
- At 02h45mn: The ship breaks in two, disappearing under the water shortly afterwards. People in the icy water have little chance of survival due to the extreme conditions.
between April 15 and April 18: Survivors are picked up by the Carpathia, a ship that responded to the Titanic's distress call.
The toll of the sinking is extremely high, with around 1,500 fatalities. Subsequent investigations revealed a number of contributing factors, including a lack of lifeboats, excessive speed in an iceberg-prone area, communication errors and design flaws in the ship's construction.
The sinking of the Titanic had a significant impact on maritime regulations and influenced safety standards for sea travel.
