شجاعة أبي الوليد بن فتحون
حكي أنه كان للعرب فارس يقال له ابن ،فتحون، وكان أشجع العرب
والعجم في زمانه وكان المستعين يكرمه ويعظمه ويجري له في كل عطية خمسمائة دينار، وكانت جيوش الكفار ،تهابه، وتعرف منه الشجاعة، وتخشى لقاءه . فيحكى أن الرومي كان إذا سقى فرسه ولم يشرب يقول له : ويلك لم لا تشرب؟ هل رأيت ابن فتحون في الماء فحسده نظراؤه على كثرة العطاء، ومنزلته من السلطان، فوشوا به عند المستعين، فأبعده ومنعه من عطائه.
ثم إن المستعين أنشأ غزوة إلى بلاد الروم، فتقابل المسلمون والمشركون صفوفًا، ثم برز علج إلى وسط الميدان ونادى وقال هل من مبارز؟ فبرز إليه فارس من المسلمين فتجاولا ،ساعة فقتله الرومي، فصاح المشركون سرورا، وانكسرت نفوس المسلمين، وجعل الكلب الرومي يجول بين الصفين وينادي هل من اثنين لواحد؟ فخرج إليه فارس من المسلمين، فقتله الرومي، فصاح الكفار ،سرورًا، وانكسرت نفوس المسلمين وجعل الكلب يجول بين الصفين وينادي ويقول : ثلاثة لواحد فلم يجترىء أحد من المسلمين أن يخرج
إليه .

And the Persians of his time, and Al-Musta'in used to honor and venerate him, and would receive five hundred dinars for each gift, and the armies of the infidels feared him, recognized his courage, and were afraid to meet him. It is said that if Rumi watered his horse and did not drink, he would say to him: Woe to you, why don’t you drink? Did you see Ibn Fathun in the water? His counterparts envied him for his abundance of giving and his status among the Sultan, so they slandered him to al-Musta’in, so he sent him away and prevented him from giving.
Then Al-Musta'in launched an expedition to the lands of the Romans, and the Muslims and polytheists met in ranks, then Alaj appeared in the middle of the field and called out and said, "Is there a swordsman?" Then a Muslim knight came to him, and they argued for an hour, and the Roman killed him. The polytheists shouted with joy, and the hearts of the Muslims were broken, and the Roman dog started roaming between the two rows and calling, “Is it two for one?” Then a Muslim knight came out to him, and the Roman killed him. The infidels shouted with joy, and the souls of the Muslims were broken, and the dog began to wander between the two rows and call and say: Three for one, so none of the Muslims dared to come out.
