Three versions of "Close to Me" were released in 1985, including the original album version, the 7-inch single version, and the 12-inch extended mix version. The album version does not feature the brass section present in all other versions, which was adapted from the traditional New Orleans funeral march melody and played by the Rent Party brass section for the single. The 7-inch version also includes a long creaking door sweep at the beginning, which originated from the music video directed by Tim Pope, in which the band is locked in a closet, falls off a cliff into the English Channel.
